MISSION, TEXAS – The City of Mission, with support from Mission Economic Development Corporation (Mission EDC), has officially opened Starlight at Shary, the Rio Grande Valley's first nighttime golf experience, ushering in a new era of recreation for South Texas.
Backed by a more than $2 million investment, the project transforms the historic Shary Municipal Golf Course into a premier nighttime destination, combining innovation with one of Mission's most cherished community assets. The improvements include state-of-the-art lighting across nine holes, upgraded greens, fairways, tee boxes and restroom facilities, new GPS-equipped golf carts, and The 19th Hole, a new gathering space featuring outdoor games, lounge seating, and food and beverages.
For more than 90 years, Shary Municipal Golf Course has been part of Mission's identity. Starlight at Shary builds on that legacy by introducing an entirely new way to experience the game while preserving the course's rich history for future generations.
"Starlight at Shary is a game-changer not only for Mission, but for the entire Rio Grande Valley," said Teclo Garcia, Chief Executive Officer of Mission Economic Development Corporation. "Projects like this redefine what community amenities can be. They enhance quality of life for our residents, create new reasons for visitors to choose Mission, and generate economic activity that benefits businesses throughout our city. This is exactly the type of investment that positions Mission as a regional leader in recreation and tourism."
Nighttime tee times begin at 9:00 p.m., with the course illuminated until 11:00 p.m., giving golfers the opportunity to play during cooler evening hours while enjoying an experience unlike anything else in the Valley.
More than extending playing hours, Starlight at Shary represents a strategic investment in Mission's future. The project expands recreation opportunities, strengthens tourism, supports local businesses, and further establishes Mission as a destination for innovation and quality-of-life amenities. Whether visitors are playing under the lights, enjoying the new social spaces at The 19th Hole, or spending the evening with family and friends, Starlight at Shary offers an experience designed to keep people in Mission longer and encourage repeat visits.
As communities continue seeking innovative ways to enhance public spaces, Starlight at Shary positions Mission at the forefront of recreational development in South Texas. It reflects the City's commitment to creating memorable experiences, reinvesting in public assets, and delivering projects that improve the quality of life for generations to come.
