The Mission Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) officially launched its new workforce initiative, Mission Ready, during a press conference held on April 1 at the Center for Education and Economic Development (CEED).

Mission Ready is a six-week paid summer internship program designed to connect local students with Mission-based businesses, providing hands-on experience in high-demand industries while strengthening the city’s talent pipeline.

The program will run from June 15 through July 27. Selected interns will earn $20 per hour, working up to 20 hours per week. The pilot year will include 15 students, with placements across a range of industries including marketing, entrepreneurship, and business operations.

The press conference brought together community leaders, education partners, and local employers. In attendance were Mayor Norie Gonzalez Garza and Councilwoman Marissa Gerlach; Sharyland ISD Superintendent Dr. Howard, along with staff and students; Mission CISD Superintendent Dr. King, Dolores Reyna, President of the Mission CISD Board of Trustees, as well as staff and students; South Texas College President Dr. Ricardo Solis and faculty; in addition to supporting partners and local businesses who will be participating in the program.

“Mission Ready represents a strategic investment in our future workforce,” said Teclo J. Garcia, Chief Executive Officer of the Mission Economic Development Corporation. “By creating direct connections between our students and local businesses, we are not only preparing young talent for real-world careers, but also strengthening the long-term economic competitiveness of our community.”

The program is open to students ages 16 and older who are enrolled in Mission-area school districts, as well as college students who reside in Mission. Intern placements are aligned with key industries identified as high-growth sectors, ensuring participants gain relevant, career-focused experience.

Participating employers play a critical role in the program by mentoring students and providing meaningful, hands-on opportunities that reflect real workplace environments.

“Mission Ready was designed to give students more than just a summer job, it’s about exposure, skill-building, and creating pathways into careers right here in Mission,” said Brianna Casares, Programs Director for MEDC. “At the same time, we’re supporting our business community by helping them invest in and shape the next generation of talent.”

As a pilot initiative, Mission Ready is focused on building a strong foundation, gathering feedback from both students and employers, and expanding in future years to serve more participants and industries.

Applications are now open, and interested students are encouraged to apply through the Mission EDC website. Mission Ready reflects MEDC’s continued commitment to workforce development, business support, and creating opportunities that drive long-term economic growth in the City of Mission.
